REFORM THE HAGUE CONVENTION
The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is commonly known as a means of reunifying families. However, it has a dark side: in many cases, children and custodial mothers are sent back to dangerous and abusive fathers from whom they fled, and who pose a grave threat in retaliation.

According to Berkeley's research, the law requires courts to order children to be returned to fathers who are proven to have physically abused the mothers, even though such violence is a known indicator of significant risk to the child.

The 'Reunited’ short film is a powerful advocacy tool. Berkeley’s 'The Hague Domestic Violence Project' has proposed ways to reform the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction in domestic violence based on analysis of more than 400 cases. Japan and Switzerland have already adopted this reform, and the US must join them. Our aim is for the central Hague Convention authorities to adopt DV reform in the Netherlands, to protect women and children of all countries that ratified The Hague Convention. White Ribbon USA is advocating for this reform on both national and international levels.
